Chapter 7 - Will

First thing in the morning, Will crept out of the house while Nadine was still sleeping. He left a note on the kitchen counter in case she woke up before he got back, but he was hoping that her injuries would leave her to sleep in and he could just come back in the afternoon with some helpful news for her.

He kept the image of her sleeping in his mind, because if he worried too much about the bears finding her or any other numerous outcomes, that was just unnecessary stress.

This time, Finn was home, and Will commandeered his help to deal with the bears, and then filled him in on all of his new theories that had sprung up since their first encounter.

“Jesus,” Finn said after Will told him about Nadine. “Sounds like you saved her life. I was wondering where the hell you’ve been, Holly would only tell me vague details.”

“I didn’t tell her much because I didn’t want either of you to panic.”

“What’s there to panic about? If anything, it sounds like you might get laid for the first time this century.”

Will gave him a look. “Not funny. It hasn’t been that long.”

“Fine, it hasn’t, but that’s beside the point.”

“You’re right, because the point is that I think all of this really is related to the treasure sickness.”

Finn stopped dead in his tracks, all the color draining from his face. His stark-white skin turning into an unusual contrast against his thick, dark brown hair. “Hold on. Can we back up a sec and start with an explanation instead of the panic-inducing shock factor?”

“Told you.” But Will humored him and stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, too. There was no one else out this early in the morning either, at least. “Look, I don’t have all the details … I just strongly suspect that those bears are being affected by the treasure just like you were, just like so many other wolves in Silvercoast are currently being affected.”

Another flash of shock crossed Finn’s face, but as he shifted from raw panic to thinking, it seemed like he was starting to understand where Will was coming from. “That’s quite the claim, but … it would explain a lot, wouldn’t it? I might have gone closer to the treasure than most other wolves did, but most of those who’ve been losing control like I have were there during the fight.”

“And so that’s what I want to find out. If there’s really a deeper cause, an external factor that’s also now influencing these bears, then all we have to do is find it and get rid of it. Then the bears are freed from the curse and won’t be a problem anymore, and so many other wolves will be free.”

“So …” A mischievous smile crossed Finn’s face. “What you’re saying is save the day, then get the girl.”

“No. But yes. Sort of? I don’t know anymore.”

Will scratched the back of his neck. He’d been working so hard since bringing Nadine back to his place to avoid thinking of her like that.
